3 stressful situations with feeding children easy to solve

The feeding of older babies ranges from when complementary feeding begins to be introduced or is relatively established and their base diet stops being milk, until they eat the same as the rest of the family.

It is a time when we are establishing eating habits and routines hitherto unknown to the baby, so it is easy for moments of stress to appear and a feeling of not knowing what to do. These are stressful situations related to feeding children that are easy to solve.

There are in fact quite common stressful situations with the feeding of children that can be solved in a relatively simple way:

- The child who does not know how to choose. Giving our children a choice between several dishes is, depending on the child, counterproductive. It is important that they learn to choose, yes, but not all children are ready as early as 2 years old. If we want to promote this learning, we must limit the offer to no more than 2 dishes and not at all meals and, of course, be prepared to respect their decision.

- The fussy child. Picky eating is easily classified as a problem, and parents tend to panic, when in fact it is very likely not. Growth, which up to 12 months is incredibly fast, slows down during the second year of life, so when our son used to eat a good plate of food, now he only selects and eats what he wants. It is best to offer him relatively small amounts of food and remind him to repeat himself if he wishes. Between the ages of 2 and 6, children also go through a stage in which they reject new or unknown dishes, a stage that, if it is not given greater importance, will pass little by little without problem.

- The boy who always finishes his plate. In general, children want to please their parents and make them happy, so if the father congratulates him for having finished the plate, the child will try to finish his portion of food even if his instincts tell him otherwise. It is important to teach him to respect the signals of his body and to learn to detect when he is full to stop eating, without listening to "a little more". It should be remembered that at this age even their stomach is small, so the amount of food it can hold is not very large and it is better to offer healthy meals and snacks relatively frequently.

You have to be clear about the roles at the time of the meal. The father or mother, for example, decides what to eat and when it is time to eat and the child decides how much he wants or if he wants to eat what is offered, and he does so only to the best of his ability. Being clear about the task of each one and with respect, there are always fewer problems.
