Oh ... time to go to sleep. What it costs us parents to send them to bed! What if a little more play, what if a story, what if a song ... and time goes by. In the end, even if you try to put them to bed at 9:00 p.m., they end up sleeping at 10:30 p.m. There is no remedy.

Many times I have wondered if it will not be too late. Or if maybe I insist on putting them to bed too soon. And although I know that each child is different and not all of them need exactly the same sleep, I have managed to find out through different experts in the field, how many hours children should sleep according to their age. And the best of all: what time should school-age children go to bed according to their age.

Not all children need the same sleep. It depends on many factors. One of them, of course, is age. Thus, while an 18-month-old baby needs about 14 hours of sleep, a 10-year-old child needs 9 hours. Based on this information, and the time your child has to wake up, we have prepared an orientation table for parents with doubts about the best time to send their child to sleep. It is based on a table that was published by the Wilson Elementary School in Kenosha (Wisconsin, USA).:

- Five years: If your child is 5 years old, he begins the first school stage in primary school. Many changes. In the first few days you may be more nervous and fall asleep much earlier than usual. Or the other way around ... because of the nerves, he can't sleep and you have to help him. If you get up very early, at 6 a.m., you should go to bed at 6.45 p.m., or 6.45 p.m., whichever you prefer. Yes, it seems impossible, it is very early, but it is the only way to make sure that he gets his sleep. If you get up later, at 8, for example, it will be enough for you to go to bed at 8:30 p.m.

- Six years: By age 6, you need 15 minutes less sleep. If your child gets up at 7.30 in the morning to go to school, he can go to sleep at 8.30.

- Seven years: At the age of seven, your child needs almost 11 hours of sleep to perform adequately in school. Try to get him to sleep more than 10 hours. Remember, though, that each child's activity during the day is different, and so are their rest needs. Don't be overwhelmed if your seven-year-old doesn't sleep more than 10 hours. If you see him active and happy ... that will be fine!

- Eight years: According to experts, at this age children can sleep 10 and a half hours. But much they sleep less. We always base ourselves on an average. If your eight-year-old has to get up very early to go to school (let's say 6.30am), he will have to go to sleep at 8pm or 8pm.

- Nine years: From this age children already need less sleep, and that the academic demands increase. Still, it is still recommended that they get at least 10 hours of sleep. Do the math!

- Ten years: Yes, the age at which they already start to feel 'older', they will also demand to go to bed later. However, they still need about 10 hours of sleep. If your 10-year-old gets up at 7am to go to school, he should go to bed at 9pm.

- Eleven and twelve years: Now yes, your child no longer needs to rigorously comply with those 10 hours of sleep. But they do have to sleep more than 8 hours. Maybe 9 hours of sleep is enough for them.

Keep in mind that this table may seem unreal to you. Actually, it would be ideal, but it is enough that we 'get close' to the recommended hours of sleep. These are between 9 and 11 hours minimum for children between 5 and 11 years old. If you notice that your child has symptoms of lack of sleep (drowsiness during the day, excessive fatigue, concentration problems ...), check their bedtime.
