What do you think of the 'key children' and the 'caprice children'?

Reconciling family and work life is the challenge that parents try to reach every day in our companies, in our workplace, when we get home and continue working to nurture the illusion in our children and direct their education. However, the differences between men and women remain abysmal, at least in terms of conciliation.

The fact that only 6 percent of men have requested a reduction in working hours to care for their children compared to 31 percent of women, who have requested it on occasion, indicates that conciliation continues to be a women's issue.

This is what emerges from a recent study on the impact of family and work reconciliation on the well-being of children, presented by the Ombudsman for Children, Arturo Canalda, in the Madrid Assembly, and prepared by the MásFamilia Foundation and the 'Efr Observatory'.

This report shows that practically all companies recognize that conciliation measures have a positive and direct impact on emotional well-being in 100 percent of cases and in the school performance of 81 percent of children of its collaborators.

For this reason, 80 percent of working fathers and mothers demand more facilities to reconcile work and family life, while 76 percent value very positively measures such as flexible schedules, 'telework' or leave of absence with reservation of jobs. And it is that the lack of time to be with the children has increased even more with the crisis, which has generated greater pressure on 'presenteeism', an obsolete model already in the most advanced countries of the European Union, which forces the worker to stay a number of hours in the company, instead of opting for other more productive work models such as the one based on the fulfillment of objectives.

But it seems that employers find it difficult to assume, despite the fact that it works against them, that a worker with an organized family life is much more productive and that applying conciliation measures constitutes an advantage for companies. The Ombudsman for Children, Arturo Canalda, has taken advantage of these figures to remind parents that in order to educate their children well, they must spend time with them, exercising responsible parenthood, avoiding stereotypes such as "key children", who spend many hours alone at home accompanied by their electronic babysitters (television, consoles, video games) or the "caprice children", the result of an excess of benevolence due to the bad conscience of the parents.

Another disaster caused by the lack of conciliation measures that prevent parents from spending more time educating their children due to 'presenteeism' and the fact that the request for a reduction in working hours by men is still frowned upon, is the number of school failure in Secondary, which in Spain amounts to 31.4 percent, while in Europe it is reduced by half, that is, to 15.4 percent.
